Dumpster Diving

Albert made a call to his son, Gary, while following Glen around the building to find the bins. Gary answered almost instantly and listened when Albert passed on the vehicle registration number and the new name he’d uncovered.

It wasn’t a whole lot to go on, especially since Tanya was a fairly common name, but it was more than they’d had before, and each new clue brought them just a little bit closer to figuring out the truth.

Gary promised to look into the car. Unless the number plate was completely fake, they would find it.

Albert put the phone back in his pocket just as they rounded a corner.

The bin turned out to be one of those giant roll top things.

“It’ll be in this corner,” Glen pointed to where he meant, and peered inside.

Excited by the smells seeping out now the lid was open, Rex jumped up, placing his front paws on the bin to get his nose closer.

“We’re going dumpster diving?” he enquired with an excited wag of his tail. “This is brilliant! You’re always telling me off for nosing around the bins. I’m not sure what has caused the change of heart, but I like it.”

Albert shoved against Rex’s shoulder. “Get down, Rex.”

Knocked off balance, Rex let his front paws fall back to the ground and glared at his human.

“What is going on?” he wanted to know. The human who lived here had opened the giant bin and then left them looking into it. He hadn’t gone far though and Rex could already see him returning with a small stepladder.

“This will make getting in and out a tad easier,” Glen announced, unfolding the steps and placing them at the mouth of the roll-top bin. “I’m a little too old to be vaulting in and out as I might have done a few decades ago.”

Albert nodded his agreement. He could remember being young and athletic. He could remember being a fast runner and having the kind of figure that made him happy to take his shirt off at the beach on a sunny day. He could remember, but only just.

Glen climbed a few steps and carefully swung a leg into the three-quarters filled receptacle. The surface was unstable, the thin, black plastic bags inside crushing under his weight. He kept one hand on the mouth of the bin as he attempted to take a step.

Unwilling to let the man go it alone, Albert followed him up and in.

Rex wagged his tail “Right, I see. You’re a good friend, old man, you know that? You’re going in there to find the best bits for me. I’ll just wait then.”

Albert and Glen were doing their best to keep their balance as the trash continued to compact beneath their feet. The smell coming off the waste was ripe and unpleasant, but Glen believed he knew precisely which bag he needed.

“It’ll be this one here,” he claimed with confidence, selecting a black sack that looked exactly the same as all the other black sacks. It was in the far corner where Glen stated he threw it just an hour ago.
